Meeting protests land acquisition scheme

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM: Hundreds of residents gathered for a street corner meeting held at Pozhichalur on Friday evening to protest the land acquisition scheme for the proposed airport modernisation programme.

The meeting was organised by the Residents Struggle Committee and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Speakers said the local bodies could pass a resolution against the proposal to acquire land. If this was done, the State and the Central Governments would have no option but to abide by them.

The residents also resolved to join in large numbers in the dharna they had planned opposite the State Guest House on Saturday and in subsequent protest meetings and demonstrations, including a human chain from Pallavaram to Chennai airport, to be held soon. Today's meeting started around 6.30 p.m. and lasted for more than two hours.
